Wildlife Preserve

One of the most enjoyed features at Ford’s Colony is our 200+ acre preserve that’s home to more than 200 species of wildlife. It's not uncommon to spot whitetail deer, wild turkeys, marsh hawks or even bald eagles here.

A group of residents have completed building a nature trail, which meanders through the preserve and includes a bird watch tower. In addition, you will enjoy over 12 miles of paved fitness trails winding through rolling woodlands.

Throughout the community, nature lovers can immerse themselves in unlimited hours of wildlife viewing.

From the beginning, Ford's Colony has been dedicated to using environmentally sensitive development techniques. It all started with a master plan that ensured more than half of the 3,000 acres be designated as green space, buffers, ponds and wildlife preserve. Further still, the development team quickly decided to modify the plan when a rare endangered species of Small Whorled Pogonia was discovered within the property by Donna Ware, of The College of William and Mary.

To protect the plant, Ford's Colony altered its development plan to protect the species to include redesigning the community's second largest road. Subsequently, Ford's Colony received conservation certificates and recognition from The United States Department of the Interior, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and The College of William and Mary. Most importantly, Ford's Colony’s environmental sensitivity helped preserve an endangered species, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently reclassified as a "threatened species."
